Where the rates come from
Rates come from Frankfurter, an open-source service listed in the Public APIs directory. It republishes reference rates from the European Central Bank and other central banks, usually updated once each working day around 16:00 CET. Weekend rates are Friday’s.
Reference rate vs what you pay
A reference (mid-market) rate is the midpoint between buying and selling. When you pay by card abroad or exchange cash, the provider adds a markup. Canadian credit cards typically charge a 2.5% foreign-transaction fee on top of the network rate. Comparing your bank’s rate with this one shows the real cost.
